Transcript: Mindset and Momentum – An Interview with Donna Kennedy

Introduction to Donna Kennedy

Editor: Today’s guest is Donna Kennedy, an Irish entrepreneur, business mentor, and coach who has spent decades helping founders build profitable businesses that fit their lives. She is known for blending smart strategy with mindset and leadership to help entrepreneurs grow sustainably rather than chasing burnout. Donna is the author of many books, including DECISION: The Gateway to Your Unlimited Potential, and is a specialist in turning ideas into momentum.

Early Entrepreneurial Roots

Editor: Could we take you back to the start of your journey and what led you there?

Donna Kennedy: I was an entrepreneur at five years old selling brooches. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit, even before I realized what it was. At 12, I was making and selling yule logs and Christmas wreaths. While I had a very difficult past, those humble beginnings and moments of desperation became the catalyst for building something better. Leadership often comes from that point where you decide you must create a different life for yourself.

The Foundation of Business: Relationships and Mindset

Editor: What did those early years teach you that still applies today?

Donna Kennedy: The biggest lesson is that business is all about people. In an age where everyone focuses on product "glitz," long-term success is built on relationships and recommendations. Furthermore, your mindset is the absolute foundation. You can have the best strategy or qualifications, but if your mindset isn't right, everything will eventually collapse. I tell people to focus on their mindset first, and the rest will fall into place.

The Philosophy of "Plan A" and Action

Editor: You’ve recently finished your ninth book. What is the core message?

Donna Kennedy: My latest book, Action, focuses on the idea that there should only be a "Plan A." Many people sabotage themselves by keeping a "Plan B" as a safety net, which leads to procrastination and hesitation. When you only have one plan, your actions become far more purposeful and intentional. While I believe in universal laws like the law of attraction, they only work when paired with calculated action. Visualization is important, but if you do nothing, nothing happens.

Building Sustainable Success and Resilience

Editor: What does "sustainable success" look like in practice?

Donna Kennedy: Sustainability is about the long term. Many people start with a vision but stop when things get tough. To be sustainable, you must be prepared for constant obstacles and decide to push through, over, or under them rather than giving up.

I also advise against waiting for motivation or confidence, as these are just "states of being" that fluctuate. You have to do the work even on the days you don't feel like it. Authenticity is a strength, and there is power in being vulnerable rather than trying to maintain a "busy" facade for social media.

Overcoming Personal Challenges and Comparison

Editor: How has your personal history shaped your approach to resilience?

Donna Kennedy: I faced significant trauma, including being raped at age seven and later developing epilepsy following a car accident. While I had supportive parents, I learned that you cannot rely on others to create your life. Blaming your circumstances or advantages doesn't help; it is more effective to focus on what you want.

A major hurdle to resilience is comparing yourself to others. On social media, we only see everyone's "highlight reels," but the reality is that everyone wakes up with bird's-nest hair. Rejection is the number one human fear, and much of our self-sabotage comes from a desire to be accepted. To find true resilience, you must stop comparing your "behind-the-scenes" to someone else's "front-of-house."

Clarity and the "Life Audit"

Editor: What practical steps can listeners take to improve their life and business?

Donna Kennedy: Clarity is essential. You need to know exactly what you want and break it down into daily bite-sized chunks. Remember that your business should be a vehicle for your lifestyle, not the other way around.

Every two months, I perform a life audit where I track where I am in areas like health, family, and career. This allows me to make small improvements before they become disasters. I also emphasize valuing your time. Successful entrepreneurs aren't just "busy"; they are calculated, they delegate, and they ensure their life is meaningful and balanced.

From "Decision" to "Action"

Editor: How do your books Decision and Action work together?

Donna Kennedy: I wrote DECISION after COVID because I saw so many people frozen at a crossroads, unsure of how to move forward. It helps people navigate indecision and make authentic choices. Action is the follow-on that provides the plan to execute those decisions. When you eliminate Plan B and commit to Plan A, you find a level of strength and creativity you didn't know you had.

Editor: Where can people find you?

Donna Kennedy: You can find my books on Amazon or visit my website at donnakennedy.com. I’m always open to connecting and seeing what happens next.
